So this is actually Backman’s second book which is set right before Britt-Marie Was Here (which I didn’t realize when I started it). It follows the life of Elsa, a seven- almost eight year old girl who is different. She gets bullied in school and she’s super smart and her parents are divorced and she lives most of the time with her mom and her mom’s partner (and their soon to be born child – her half sibling- Halfie )in the same building as Britt-Marie.

Basically this book follows the events that unfold when Elsa’s eccentric grandmother dies. She was Elsa’s only real friend but when she dies she leaves Elsa with a letter which leads her on an adventure to discover the past of her grandmother’s life and also to learn more about the other people in her building. I picked up this book because it is by the same author as A Man Called Ove which I quite enjoyed. This book is all about Britt-Marie who essentially has to rebuild her life after she leaves her cheating husband. The only problem is that she’s not exactly young and she doesn’t have a lot of experience doing anything except cooking and cleaning.
