My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrik Backman
So this is actually Backman’s second book which is set right before Britt-Marie Was Here (which I didn’t realize when I started it). It follows the life of Elsa, a seven- almost eight year old girl who is different. She gets bullied in school and she’s super smart and her parents are divorced and she lives most of the time with her mom and her mom’s partner (and their soon to be born child – her half sibling- Halfie )in the same building as Britt-Marie.
Basically this book follows the events that unfold when Elsa’s eccentric grandmother dies. She was Elsa’s only real friend but when she dies she leaves Elsa with a letter which leads her on an adventure to discover the past of her grandmother’s life and also to learn more about the other people in her building.
